CDP provides USD 50 million financing to FONPLATA for water projects in the Amazon
Funds will be allocated to local municipalities to strengthen access to drinking water and sanitation services in urban areas of the Amazon region, in line with post COP30 priorities
Supporting sustainable urban development projects in the water resources and sanitation infrastructure sector in Brazil’s Amazon region. These are the objectives of the USD 50 million financing, provided by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) to FONPLATA. The operation was announced on the occasion of the Annual Meetings of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), held in Asunción, Paraguay, from 11 to 14 March.
The resources will be used by FONPLATA to finance projects promoted by governments and local municipalities, with a particular focus on urban areas in the Amazon region, contributing to improved access to basic services. The operation aims to enhance the quality of life of local communities, strengthen climate resilience, and support more sustainable and inclusive urban development.
The collaboration between CDP and FONPLATA builds on a cooperation pathway launched in 2024 with the signing of an initial USD 30 million agreement in support of sustainable projects in Latin America and is further strengthened through this new operation. Within this framework, CDP reinforces its commitment alongside FONPLATA, while enhancing the role of regional multilateral development banks in channeling resources towards investment-ready projects and maximizing their impact on the ground. This approach supports sustainable and resilient urban development in areas of strategic global importance. The partnership between CDP and the Development Bank has also been recognized through the Impact Award, promoted by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and POLIMI Graduate School of Management, for the tangible impact achieved on territories and local communities.
The initiative is fully aligned with the priorities that emerged at COP30 in Belém, translating commitments on climate resilience, inclusion and ecosystem protection into concrete actions benefiting Amazonian communities.
Carlo Maria Rossotto, Director of Development Cooperation and International Institutional Relations at Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, stated: “Through this financing, CDP strengthens its commitment to the protection and sustainable development of the Amazon, a region of global strategic importance from an environmental, climate and social perspective. The collaboration with FONPLATA represents a highly valuable partnership to support investments that improve access to essential services, enhance territorial resilience, and generate concrete and longlasting benefits for local communities”.
Luciana Botafogo Brito, Executive President of FONPLATA, declared: “We are pleased to further strengthen our partnership with CDP through this new operation, which also translates the commitments emerging from COP30 into concrete investments on the ground. This financing will allow FONPLATA to leverage its on-the-ground capacity to channel resources toward high-impact water and sanitation projects in Brazil’s Amazon region, supporting resilient and inclusive urban development. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to mobilizing sustainable finance and translating global climate priorities into tangible benefits for communities and ecosystems”.
