FONPLATA celebrates its 50th anniversary with an event in Argentina and highlights its achievements
As part of the festivities, FONPLATA celebrated five decades of uninterrupted work in favor of development and integration with a remarkable event at the Mariano Moreno National Library in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The ceremony was attended by senior FONPLATA representatives, associates, strategic partners, representatives of executing agencies, and guests, such as FONPLATA's Alternate Governor and Argentina's Secretary of Finance, Pablo Quirno; the Vice President of Finance, Rafael Robles; the Vice President of Operations and Countries, Eliana Dam; and the Country Coordinator, Malena Araneo.
The choice of the Mariano Moreno National Library as the venue for the celebration was related to FONPLATA's support to the Digitization Program of the Library's Cultural Heritage, underscoring the Bank’s commitment to the country's cultural heritage.
The attendees participated in a virtual and interactive tour of the Bank's history highlighting significant milestones, such as the growth and consolidation achieved in recent decades, its vision for the future, the strengthening of strategic alliances with other development banks and regional and global multilateral agencies, the expansion of its financing capacity, and the obtention of the best credit ratings in the region. Through new thematic credit lines and access to capital markets, FONPLATA reaffirms its commitment to inclusive and sustainable development. In addition, the recent approval of the new Articles of Agreement opens the door to the incorporation of new partners, further consolidating its role in the field of development.
FONPLATA's Country Coordinator for Argentina, Malena Araneo, highlighted some of the achievements during 2024, such as the reconfirmation of the commitment of the five founding countries as full members of the Bank; the approval of a historic loan for USD 200 million for the food program (AlimentAR); the priorities agreement with the National Ministry of Economy; and the approval of a Technical Cooperation to support Argentina's Accession Process to the OECD.
In her opening remarks, Eliana Dam, Vice President of Operations and Countries, stated: “Argentina has been key to FONPLATA's growth and consolidation, and today I am very pleased to underscore the importance of this country to our institution.” And added: “This year we have taken a step towards a new capitalization that we expect to be effective in 2026. In 2027, we plan to recapitalize with an additional USD 3.5 billion, aiming at doubling our lending capital and thus expanding our capacity to support development projects in the region.”
Currently, FONPLATA’s active portfolio in Argentina comprises 28 operations for approximately USD 740 million in the Infrastructure (transportation and logistics), Economic-Productive (production and governance), and Socio-environmental (health and education, water and sanitation) sectors.
On its 50th anniversary, FONPLATA reaffirms its commitment to consolidate its position as a strategic ally of the country and the entire region, supporting the preparation of new operations prioritized at both the national and subnational levels, and ready to face the challenges that arise with the usual agility, flexibility, and proximity.
