Works financed by FONPLATA will improve the quality of life in Brazil’s Federal District
Through the Infrastructure and Urban Rehabilitation Program of Brazil’s Federal District (DF), the Development Bank will grant USD 60 million to promote the urban wellbeing of the people of the administrative regions of Taguatinga and Sol Nascente/Pôr do Sol. Some of the actions planned are works to restore drainage systems and urban redevelopment.
Urban infrastructure works will reduce areas prone to flooding and improve rainwater harvesting, urban accessibility, and road circulation. In addition, road paving works, and sidewalks and curbs construction will be conducted, and street lighting will be installed.
The DF is one of Brazil's 27 federal units and is divided into 33 administrative regions. The federal capital of Brazil, Brasilia, which is also the seat of the DF government, is located in its territory.
The Administrative Region of Taguatinga, with an urban population of over 210,000 people, suffers recurrent flooding problems causing great damage to the population.
The Administrative Region of Sol Nascente/Pôr do Sol is considered the largest slum in Brazil with 32,000 homes. Frequent rains, coupled with the lack of a drainage system, mainly affect people in socially vulnerable situations.
