FONPLATA supports sustainable housing in Uruguay

FONPLATA

FONPLATA and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) signed a Non-Reimbursable Technical Cooperation Agreement to promote sustainable housing construction with wood produced in Uruguay.

This is the second project approved by FONPLATA, for USD 195,500, under the Roadmap for the Construction of Social Housing in Wood in Uruguay, promoted by the Ministry of Housing and Land Management, the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries, and the Honorary Commission on Wood.

IICA will collaborate closely with the beneficiary, MEVIR, a non-governmental public entity whose objective is to eradicate unhealthy housing conditions for rural wage earners. The entity will provide the land, infrastructure (roads, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, among others), and social and technical support.

The project aims at contributing to the massive construction of wooden houses as a viable alternative to reduce the housing deficit and protect the environment. It will also promote sustainable and efficient practices in Uruguay through the implementation of innovative tools and the definition of performance standards.

As part of the actions to be financed, there is a pilot project, which includes the construction of two wooden houses that will provide comparable results between wood and conventional construction systems.

The following authorities were present at the signing of the Agreement, at FONPLATA's office in Montevideo: the Executive President of FONPLATA, Luciana Botafogo; the Minister of Housing, Raúl Lozano; the IICA representative in Uruguay, Rodrigo Saldías Spinetti; the President of MEVIR, Juan Pablo Delgado; and the directors of FONPLATA for Uruguay, Fernando Luis Scelza and Valérie Stahl, together with the Country Coordinator, Carolina Vera.
