FONPLATA approves financing to turn Arapiraca, Brazil, into a more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient city

Under the scope of the Development Bank's Sustainable Debt Framework, the Executive Board of Directors approved a funding of USD 40 million for the Arapiraca Mobility and Socio-Environmental Development Program. The initiative seeks to improve the residents' quality of life of and the environmental sustainability of this municipality in the Brazilian state of Alagoas, through investments in urban infrastructure, housing, energy efficiency, and social development.

The Municipality of Arapiraca will conduct the USD 50-million project, which aims to consolidate the city by promoting more balanced, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable urban development.

The program will benefit the 234,000 inhabitants of Arapiraca, with special attention to vulnerable communities. Significant improvements are expected in indicators, such as the Social Progress Index, reduced travel time on public and private transportation, and reduced energy consumption in the municipality.

Planned investments include:

· The construction and modernization of roads to improve connectivity between suburbs and the urban center;

· The redevelopment of vulnerable neighborhoods and the construction of 200 social housing units;

· The construction of bike lanes, sidewalks, and public spaces under accessibility and sustainability criteria;

· The replacement of public lighting with LED technology and the installation of photovoltaic solar energy systems in municipal buildings;

· The creation of an environmental preservation area on the banks of the Piauí River;

· The construction of a new Public Market and a Supply Center (CEASA) to strengthen the local economy;

· The promotion of selective waste collection through the construction of a recycling plant; and

· The transformation of the old railway station into a technical training center for young people.

With this operation, FONPLATA reaffirms its commitment to the development of medium-sized cities in Latin America, supporting projects that integrate

infrastructure, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability to improve people's lives.
