Territorial Integration and Productive Development Strengthening in the Province of Chaco, Argentina
FONPLATA approved a new operation to complete the paving of Provincial Route No. 13, one of the most important road corridors in southwestern Chaco. The initiative is expected to improve territorial connectivity, promote productive development, and expand communities’ access to services and opportunities.
At its most recent meeting held in June, the Bank’s Executive Board approved the “Program to Strengthen Road Corridors in the Province of Chaco – Basic Infrastructure and Paving of Provincial Route No. 13 (Sections 3 and 4),” providing USD 120 million in financing for the construction of 95 km of new road infrastructure. This project will help create a continuous paved corridor of nearly 170 km between National Routes No. 11 and No. 95.
Strategically positioned in northern Argentina, the Province of Chaco links national logistics corridors with the Paraná–Paraguay Waterway and the main regional integration routes. Provincial Route No. 13 is instrumental in facilitating the mobility of people and goods, connecting towns and granting communities better access to markets, essential services, and new economic opportunities.
The project is part of FONPLATA’s long-term strategy to develop this corridor, building on the Bank's previous financing for earlier sections of the route. The completion of this phase will finalize Sections 3 and 4, strengthen the integration in the southwestern part of the province and improve connections between regional economies and the country’s main logistics and production hubs.
The works will include measures to improve road safety, optimize year-round traffic flow, and increase the infrastructure’s resilience to extreme weather events. The program also includes initiatives to promote social inclusion, gender equality, and the strengthening of institutional capacities for road infrastructure management.
More than 100,000 residents in the project’s catchment area are expected to directly benefit from improved connectivity, safety, and access to services. Strengthening the provincial road network will help reduce logistics costs, boost economic activity, and improve the competitiveness of regional production chains.
With this approval, FONPLATA reaffirms its commitment to Argentina’s sustainable development and to reducing regional disparities through investments that generate economic and social impact, strengthen regional integration, and improve communities’ quality of life.
