Maldonado will improve water and sanitation services with FONPLATA's support

FONPLATA — Development Bank will grant a USD 55-million loan to expand and improve drinking water and sanitation services in the Department of Maldonado, Uruguay's third most populated department, with about 200,000 inhabitants. In recent decades, it has become an important center attracting population due to tourism, the construction sector and the growth of services. During peak seasonal periods, the population of Maldonado–San Carlos–Punta del Este and the east coast of the Department experience an increase of more than 450,000 people, which generates significant pressure on public services, especially on the drinking water and sewage systems.

This program is expected to directly benefit approximately 160,000 inhabitants (68,000 households) by improving the quality of drinking water provision. It will also benefit approximately 44,000 inhabitants (18,500 households) by increasing the coverage of domestic wastewater collection and treatment, which will reduce pollution through the proper treatment and disposal of household effluents, while protecting the environment and complying with environmental laws.

This loan was granted with preferential financial conditions, a compensated operating rate, considering Uruguay's investment grade. It is structured in four stages, with a 42-month disbursement term and a 19-year amortization period.
