FONPLATA and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) join forces

OTCA

On Friday, September 13, in Brasilia, the Executive President of FONPLATA, Luciana Botafogo, and the Acting Secretary General of ACTO, Vanesssa Grazziotin, signed a Letter of Intent to establish inter-institutional cooperation and work together in the different regions of the countries of the River Plate Basin and the Amazon Basin.

The purpose of the LOI is to generate actions to protect the environment, promote sustainable development, strengthen the institutions, and transfer knowledge, as well as to promote technical and financial cooperation, participation and governance, and favor key international commitments, such as the 2030 Agenda and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Within the framework of the cooperation, joint initiatives would be developed to implement the objectives of the Belem Declaration for the sustainable management of the Amazon. In addition, collaboration in the areas of science and technology and water resources would be strengthened. Concrete actions to promote the empowerment of women and the incorporation of the gender perspective in regional policies would also be encouraged, as well as initiatives to promote the cultural identity of Indigenous peoples and traditional communities.

ACTO is an intergovernmental organization made up of the eight Amazonian countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, which signed the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT), thus constituting the only socio-environmental bloc in Latin America focused on the Amazon Region.
